5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting a GLP-1 After Menopause | Plus Week 25 Weigh-in Update
Our summary
Bobbi B., a therapist and artist who shares her GLP-1 experience on YouTube, lists five things she wishes she had known before starting a GLP-1 medication as a perimenopausal or postmenopausal woman. She says she is not a medical doctor and that none of this is medical advice. She opens with a week 25 weigh-in: she started at 210 lb, weighed 191.4 lb last week and 190.6 lb this week, for a total loss of 19.4 lb. She is 5'9" and says she averages between a half and one pound lost per week.
One person's experience, in their words. Not medical advice.

What else the video covers
The first two lessons are about eating. She says appetite and thirst suppression were stronger than she expected, and that skipping meals is tempting but risks muscle loss, bone mineral loss and fatigue. Her approach is to plan nutrient-dense, calorie-dense meals, aim for three meals a day, and keep water close. She also describes a surge in hunger around day five after her shot. She explains this using the half-lives she gives, 5 days for tirzepatide (Zepbound) and 7 days for semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy), and says she handles it with volume eating such as large salads or vegetable soups with protein.
The last three lessons are about support and expectations. She recommends finding a community, saying other GLP-1 users helped her learn the differences between semaglutide and tirzepatide, and that switching to Zepbound made a difference for her. She says to focus on fat loss rather than weight loss, using strength training, progress photos, a tape measure, a smart scale or a DEXA scan. Finally, she says to expect slow and steady loss, noting she has had months with no change on the scale while her clothes fit differently and she got stronger.

Questions this video answers
Why do I get hungry a few days before my next GLP-1 shot?
Bobbi says the medication level in the bloodstream is not constant, especially early on. She gives half-lives of 5 days for tirzepatide and 7 days for semaglutide, so by day five or six hunger can return. She says volume eating helps her stay in a reasonable calorie deficit.
How much weight did Bobbi lose in 25 weeks on a GLP-1?
She says she started at 210 lb and weighed 190.6 lb at week 25, a total loss of 19.4 lb. She says this is roughly a half to one pound per week on average, and that she lost 10 lb in her first month, mostly water and inflammation.
Why focus on fat loss instead of weight loss on a GLP-1 after menopause?
Bobbi says losing weight while preserving lean muscle may be slower but is better for overall health, and that faster loss can raise the risk of bone and muscle loss for menopausal women. She suggests strength training, progress photos, a tape measure, a smart scale or a DEXA scan to track body composition.
Is it normal to lose weight slowly on a GLP-1 during menopause?
She says it is common to lose about a half to two pounds per week after the initial drop, and that menopause makes weight loss slower. She reports months with no scale change while her clothes fit differently and she gained strength.

- GLP-1 vs GLP-2 vs GLP-3: what the names mean, and which ones you can actually buy
GLP-1 drugs such as semaglutide act on one receptor. "GLP-2" is used online for tirzepatide (Zepbound, Mounjaro), which acts on two, GIP and GLP-1, and "GLP-3" for retatrutide, which adds the glucagon receptor. Neither nickname is the real name: GLP-2 is a separate gut hormone whose drug, Gattex, treats short bowel syndrome. Retatrutide produced 28.3% mean weight loss at 80 weeks in its phase 3 trial but is not FDA-approved; Lilly plans to file in Q1 2027. Tirzepatide is the strongest option you can buy today.
- How to get prescribed a GLP-1, and what the label actually requires
Almost every page on this says you need a BMI of 30, or 27 with a weight-related condition. Those numbers are not what the indication says. Wegovy's label describes adults with obesity, or adults with overweight and at least one weight-related comorbid condition, and it separately lists two routes most people have never heard of: reducing cardiovascular risk in adults with established cardiovascular disease, and treating MASH with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis. Whether you qualify is a clinical judgement, and it is a wider door than the BMI number suggests.
- GLP-1 hair loss: what is actually going on
Hair shedding on a GLP-1 is real, and the labels now count it: 3.3% of people on Wegovy 2.4 mg and 5.8% on 7.2 mg, against 1% on placebo, most of them women. Wegovy's and Zepbound's labels both say it was associated with weight reduction. Rapid weight loss is a long-recognised trigger for a temporary shedding phase, after bariatric surgery and crash dieting too. Two things make it more likely: how fast you are losing, and whether you eat enough protein and micronutrients.
