Does New Mexico Medicaid cover GLP-1s for weight loss?

Not covered for weight loss

New Mexico Medicaid did not cover GLP-1s for weight loss as of January 2026, according to KFF, though it must cover them for type 2 diabetes.

New Mexico Medicaid covers one or more older weight-loss drugs, but no GLP-1.

Typical when covered

Federal law lets each state decide whether Medicaid pays for drugs used for weight loss, while drugs approved for diabetes must be covered. KFF counts coverage under fee-for-service; if your New Mexico Medicaid coverage comes through a managed care plan, its formulary can differ, so ask the plan before you fill.

What may have changed since January

CMS’s BALANCE model lets state Medicaid programs add GLP-1s for weight management at a negotiated price. States could join on a rolling basis from May 1, 2026 through January 1, 2027, and the state application deadline was July 31, 2026. We could not find a published list of the states that joined, so this page does not say whether New Mexico Medicaid did. Ask your plan. Either way your cost stays at Medicaid’s nominal copay, which BALANCE does not change.

On Medicare in New Mexico?

Medicare’s temporary GLP-1 Bridge works the same in every state: a $50 copay for a one-month supply of Wegovy, Foundayo or the Zepbound KwikPen, for people with Part D who meet its weight and health rules.

medicare.gov, read Oct 3, 2026: “You’ll pay a $50 copayment to the pharmacy for a one-month supply (either 28 or 30 days, depending on drug).”

GLP-1s in New Mexico: common questions

Does New Mexico Medicaid cover Wegovy or Zepbound for weight loss?

Not as of January 2026: KFF found New Mexico Medicaid did not cover GLP-1s for obesity under fee-for-service. New Mexico Medicaid covers one or more older weight-loss drugs, but no GLP-1. Coverage for weight loss is optional for each state, so it can change; ask your plan, and see whether New Mexico has joined the BALANCE model.

Does New Mexico Medicaid cover Ozempic or Mounjaro for diabetes?

Yes. Weight-loss coverage is optional for states, but Medicaid must cover GLP-1s approved for type 2 diabetes, so Ozempic, Mounjaro and the others are covered for blood sugar in New Mexico as in every state, usually behind prior authorization. Wegovy for heart risk and Zepbound for sleep apnea are required uses too (KFF).

Has New Mexico Medicaid joined the BALANCE model?

We could not find a published list of the state Medicaid programs taking part, so we cannot say. BALANCE is a voluntary CMS model: states could join on a rolling basis from May 1, 2026 through January 1, 2027, and the state application deadline was July 31, 2026 (KFF). It does not change what you pay, because federal law already limits Medicaid out-of-pocket costs to nominal amounts. Ask New Mexico Medicaid whether it joined.

What is the cheapest GLP-1 program that ships to New Mexico?

SnagRx, at $69 a month, month to month all in (membership included), checked Oct 8, 2026. Then Embody at $69 on a 12-month plan, and CoreAge Rx at $99, month to month. These are telehealth programs: a clinician licensed in New Mexico reviews you online and a pharmacy mails the medication.

How many GLP-1 telehealth programs ship to New Mexico?

17 of the 21 partner programs we track ship to New Mexico on a state list we could verify. None of them names New Mexico as a state it does not serve. 4 publish a state count without the list, so we cannot say: bmiMD, DudeMeds, TMates, SkinnyRx.

How many GLP-1 prescriptions did New Mexico Medicaid pay for in 2025?

64,832, 32nd of the 50 states and DC, with $64.1 million reimbursed before rebates (CMS State Drug Utilization Data). Wegovy, Zepbound and Saxenda, the brands approved for weight management, were 0.2% of those prescriptions.

Can I get a GLP-1 for $50 a month on Medicare in New Mexico?

If you have Medicare Part D and meet the rules, yes. Medicare's temporary GLP-1 Bridge is the same in every state: medicare.gov says "This temporary program is available nationwide (including all states and U.S. territories) to certain people with Medicare drug coverage (Part D)" and "You’ll pay a $50 copayment to the pharmacy for a one-month supply (either 28 or 30 days, depending on drug)."
