STARTING MY MOUNJARO JOURNEY | week 1 results, start weight, side effects & injecting my first dose

Patient storyBabbling by the Brook167,042 views20:37Oct 2024

Our summary

The creator, a UK woman who films vlogs, records the start of her Mounjaro treatment. She says she has been stuck in a cycle of losing and regaining a pound at a time, and that Slimming World, intermittent fasting and calorie counting have not worked for her. She is paying privately through Med Express, and says she completed the required forms, ID, photo and GP details. She shows the box, the sharps bin and four weekly needles, notes that everyone starts on 2.5 mg, and chooses to inject at night so any side effects can be slept off. She walks through attaching the needle, priming the pen and injecting into her stomach.

What else the video covers

She gives her start weight as 10 stone 12 at a height of 4'11, with a healthy weight she puts at around 8 to 8.5 stone. Her goal is to lose about 2.5 stone, and she aims for 1 to 2 lb a week. After the first week she reports weighing 10 stone 7, a loss of 5 lb, which she says is far more than she expected. She mentions using a referral code from another person, which she says lowered her prescription cost.

For side effects, she describes strong thirst most days, mild nausea and no wish for her morning coffee the day after the dose, and occasional headaches. She says she had more energy and a better mood rather than fatigue. She also reports slightly less heavy, painful and swollen legs, which she links to her lipoedema and lymphoedema, while calling the change minor. Her biggest change is the loss of appetite and food noise. She tracks calories and protein in MyFitnessPal, takes prescribed calcium and vitamin D, has started fibre gummies bought for about £18, and plans to add a multivitamin. She says she is not recommending the drug to anyone.

Questions this video answers

How much weight did she lose in the first week on Mounjaro?

She says she went from 10 stone 12 to 10 stone 7 after the first week on 2.5 mg, a loss of 5 lb. She describes this as well above what she expected, since she had aimed for 1 to 2 lb a week.

What side effects did she have in week one of Mounjaro?

She reports strong thirst almost every day, some nausea and no desire for her morning coffee the day after injecting, and occasional mild headaches. She says she felt more energy and a better mood instead of the tiredness she had read about.

How does she inject the Mounjaro pen?

She says she attaches a needle to the pen, primes it by turning the dose knob two clicks and pushing until a drop appears, then turns the dial to one and holds it down until it returns to zero. She injected into her stomach and says the dial returning to zero shows the full dose was delivered.

Did Mounjaro help her lipoedema symptoms?

She says her legs felt a little less heavy, painful and swollen by the end of week one. She calls the difference minimal and not groundbreaking, and says she does not yet know whether it will last.

Our guides closest to what this video covers, with prices checked weekly.

  • Mounjaro side effects: the label's numbers by dose, the low blood sugar risk, and how tirzepatide compares at weight-loss doses

On Mounjaro's own label, the common side effects are stomach ones and they rise with the dose: nausea in 12, 15 and 18 percent of people at 5, 10 and 15 mg against 4 percent on placebo, diarrhea 12 to 17 against 9, and any gastrointestinal reaction in 37 to 44 percent against 20. Most of it happens while the dose is being raised and fades. Low blood sugar is rare on Mounjaro alone and is mainly a risk when it is added to insulin or a sulfonylurea. Below: the full table, the rare warnings, and why Zepbound's numbers for the same molecule look higher.

  • Mounjaro for weight loss, and why Zepbound exists

Mounjaro is tirzepatide approved for type 2 diabetes. Zepbound is the same molecule from the same maker, approved for weight management, and it goes to the same 15 mg. So unlike Ozempic and Wegovy, there is no dose ceiling pushing you from one to the other: the reason people move is coverage and cash price, not strength. Using Mounjaro for weight is off-label and a prescriber's decision. In the one head-to-head trial, tirzepatide beat semaglutide, 20.2% mean body-weight loss at 72 weeks against 13.7%.

  • Mounjaro vs Ozempic, and the trial everyone quotes about it

Mounjaro is tirzepatide and Ozempic is semaglutide: different molecules, not two brands of the same drug. Both are approved for type 2 diabetes, and the weight-loss versions are Zepbound and Wegovy. In the one head-to-head trial, SURMOUNT-5, tirzepatide produced 20.2% mean body-weight loss at 72 weeks against semaglutide's 13.7%. The detail almost every page omits: that trial dosed semaglutide to 2.4 mg in people without diabetes, which is the Wegovy range. Ozempic tops out at 2 mg. The famous result did not test Ozempic's dose range.
