Wegovy 6 Months|How I manage common side effects

Patient storyReneé19,313 views21:00Jan 2024

Our summary

Reneé, who says she works as a nurse, shares what she learned over 6 months on Wegovy and how she handled side effects. She explains that she has struggled with her weight since her teens and reached 211 lbs. Her primary care nurse practitioner first prescribed phentermine, which she says helped her lose 10 to 11 lbs but made her feel jittery, so she stopped. In August 2023 an endocrinologist and a dietitian advised more protein and vegetables, more strength training, and mindful eating, and the endocrinologist prescribed Wegovy.

What else the video covers

She says the 0.25 mg and 0.5 mg doses caused little more than some sleepiness and mild acid reflux. At 1.0 mg she developed diarrhea, which she found hard because she already has IBS with diarrhea. She says she managed it with Imodium taken at the labeled dose, more fiber from Olipop, and protein from bars instead of shakes. She says fried or very sugary foods still caused trouble, so she stays near a bathroom when eating them. She adds that she checks with a provider before using Imodium alongside Wegovy.

For nausea, she says it showed up the day after her Monday night injection when she had not eaten enough. Her fixes were eating a full dinner, eating saltine crackers with water on waking, and asking a provider about Zofran if it persists. For hydration she aims for 64 oz of water a day and adds sugar-free Liquid IV packets. She also describes asking her doctor to step back to 0.5 mg after a rough stretch at 1.7 mg, then moving up again, and notes her insurance would not approve a repeat of 0.5 mg. She calls Wegovy a tool that still requires effort with food and activity.

Questions this video answers

How did she manage diarrhea on Wegovy?

Reneé says she took Imodium at the recommended dose, added fiber with Olipop, and swapped protein shakes for protein bars. She notes that fried or very sugary foods still caused problems, and she suggests speaking with a healthcare provider before using Imodium with Wegovy.

What helped with nausea on Wegovy?

She says nausea happened when she did not eat enough, so she made sure to eat a good dinner. When she still woke up nauseous, she ate saltine crackers and drank water right away, and she mentions Zofran as an option to ask a provider about.

Can you go back to a lower Wegovy dose if side effects are too much?

Reneé says she asked her doctor to lower her from 1.7 mg to 0.5 mg after severe diarrhea, and her doctor agreed. She later moved back up to 1.0 mg and then 1.7 mg, and says insurance approval for repeating a dose can vary.

Our guides closest to what this video covers, with prices checked weekly.

  • Wegovy side effects, and why the top of the ladder is different

Wegovy's side effects are semaglutide's side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation, worst in the first weeks and after each dose increase. What makes Wegovy different from Ozempic is not the molecule but the destination. Wegovy is dosed for weight management, climbing to 2.4 mg with a 7.2 mg high-dose strength above it, and dose is the main driver of how pronounced the gastrointestinal effects get. It also carries a boxed warning for thyroid C-cell tumour risk. One useful fact while you decide whether to push through: Novo's self-pay price is flat across every pen dose, so a slower climb costs a brand patient nothing.

  • GLP-1 constipation, nausea, diarrhoea and fatigue: the label numbers, and what the labels say to do

The four gut effects are the four most common side effects of every GLP-1, and the labels put numbers on them. On Wegovy 2.4 mg: nausea 44%, diarrhoea 30%, constipation 24%, vomiting 24%, fatigue 11%, against 16%, 16%, 11%, 6% and 5% on placebo. On Zepbound at 15 mg: nausea 28%, diarrhoea 23%, constipation 11%, vomiting 13%, fatigue 7%. They cluster around dose increases, they are the reason 6.8% of Wegovy patients and up to 6.7% of Zepbound patients stopped, and both labels prescribe the same fix: climb slower.

  • Ozempic side effects, and the ones that actually make people stop

The common Ozempic side effects are gastrointestinal: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation. They cluster in the first weeks and after each dose increase, which is why the drug is titrated slowly rather than started at the dose that does the work. Ozempic also carries a boxed warning for thyroid C-cell tumour risk, and the label for Wegovy, the same molecule, advises against combining it with another GLP-1. The practical thing nobody tells you: most people who quit do it during titration, and what decides whether that costs them money is the seller's pause and refund terms, not the sticker price.
