Why I Didn’t Gain Weight a Year After Wegovy | Real Talk

Patient storyHeyBloss132,014 views14:01Feb 2023

Our summary

Blossom, who runs the HeyBloss channel, gives an update more than a year after she stopped taking Wegovy. She says she lost a total of 60 pounds over six to nine months on the medication. In this video she covers her appetite after stopping, whether she regained weight, and how she has kept her weight steady since.

One person's experience, in their words. Not medical advice.

What else the video covers

She says her appetite stayed suppressed for the first month after her last dose and then returned gradually. She says she looked online and found that the drug can take one to two months to leave the body. She reports mild nausea, which she treated with over-the-counter medicine, and some headaches, though she is unsure whether they came from the drug leaving her body or from a depressive period. She says that period, not Wegovy, explains the extra weight loss people noticed on her Instagram. She was about 155 to 160 pounds when she stopped, dropped to 135 pounds, and has since regained to a range of 160 to 165 pounds. She suggests stopping Wegovy 5 to 10 pounds below a goal weight, since appetite returns.

For maintenance, she credits heavy weight training, a higher protein intake (from about 100 grams to at least 120 grams a day, sometimes 160), and creatine. She mentions yoga and a workout tracking app she says is not sponsored. As a bariatric surgery patient, she says eating often is hard because she fills up quickly. She encourages viewers to talk with a doctor and a nutritionist, and to plan for life after stopping the medication.

Our guides closest to what this video covers, with prices checked weekly.

  • Wegovy side effects, and why the top of the ladder is different

Wegovy's side effects are semaglutide's side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation, worst in the first weeks and after each dose increase. What makes Wegovy different from Ozempic is not the molecule but the destination. Wegovy is dosed for weight management, climbing to 2.4 mg with a 7.2 mg high-dose strength above it, and dose is the main driver of how pronounced the gastrointestinal effects get. It also carries a boxed warning for thyroid C-cell tumour risk. One useful fact while you decide whether to push through: Novo's self-pay price is flat across every pen dose, so a slower climb costs a brand patient nothing.

  • Zepbound vs Wegovy: the two weight-loss brands, priced every way you can buy them

Zepbound is tirzepatide and Wegovy is semaglutide, and in the one trial that ran them head-to-head, tirzepatide's molecule lost 20.2% of body weight against 13.7% over 72 weeks. That settles which is stronger. What it does not settle is which you can afford: Zepbound self-pay runs $299 to $699 a month by dose, Wegovy's pen is $349 flat and its new tablet starts at $149, and with a commercial plan that covers either, both fall to $25.

  • Wegovy 7.2 mg (Wegovy HD): what the higher dose adds, and what it costs

Wegovy HD is semaglutide at 7.2 mg, three times the standard 2.4 mg dose, in its own pen. In the STEP UP trial it took 18.7% off body weight at 72 weeks against 15.6% for 2.4 mg and 3.9% for placebo, in 1,407 adults with obesity. That puts it within 1.5 points of tirzepatide's head-to-head result and makes it the strongest semaglutide there is. Novo sells it direct for $399 a month, $50 above the standard pen, and it sits above the normal ladder rather than replacing it.
