Wegovy Week 4 - Trusting the process

Patient storyJennifer Oller13,422 views3:30Mar 2023

Our summary

In this short update, Jennifer Oller says she is in week five of taking Wegovy. The previous week, week four, was her first on the 0.5 dose. She reports no additional weight loss that week, but says her clothes are fitting better, her boyfriend seems to have noticed a change, and she thinks it shows in her face. She says she is comfortable with the progress because she sees changes beyond the scale, and she describes her approach as trusting the process.

One person's experience, in their words. Not medical advice.

What else the video covers

She says she noticed no different feeling from moving to the higher dose. The main topic is injection sites. She says she had been injecting in her stomach, then noticed that the new package listed the thigh or the arm. Last week she used her thigh and says it was fine. This week she used her arm and calls it the worst spot so far. According to her, the medicine burned going in, there was a little blood afterward, and it felt like a small knot for a short time. She says she felt fine by Wednesday, two days after her Monday injection day.

She compares the sites: she did not notice the stomach injection at all, felt the thigh a bit more, and felt the arm the most. She adds that she is used to the stomach from past B12 shots. She encourages others in the same situation not to get frustrated if the scale does not move. The last part covers packing for a Las Vegas trip, where she plans to film and see shows.

  • Wegovy side effects, and why the top of the ladder is different

Wegovy's side effects are semaglutide's side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation, worst in the first weeks and after each dose increase. What makes Wegovy different from Ozempic is not the molecule but the destination. Wegovy is dosed for weight management, climbing to 2.4 mg with a 7.2 mg high-dose strength above it, and dose is the main driver of how pronounced the gastrointestinal effects get. It also carries a boxed warning for thyroid C-cell tumour risk. One useful fact while you decide whether to push through: Novo's self-pay price is flat across every pen dose, so a slower climb costs a brand patient nothing.

  • Wegovy 7.2 mg (Wegovy HD): what the higher dose adds, and what it costs

Wegovy HD is semaglutide at 7.2 mg, three times the standard 2.4 mg dose, in its own pen. In the STEP UP trial it took 18.7% off body weight at 72 weeks against 15.6% for 2.4 mg and 3.9% for placebo, in 1,407 adults with obesity. That puts it within 1.5 points of tirzepatide's head-to-head result and makes it the strongest semaglutide there is. Novo sells it direct for $399 a month, $50 above the standard pen, and it sits above the normal ladder rather than replacing it.

  • Wegovy pill vs injection: the same semaglutide, two schedules, two price lists

The Wegovy pill and the Wegovy pen are the same drug, semaglutide. The pill is one tablet a day on an empty stomach with a little water; the pen is one injection a week at any time. Novo's cash price is $149 to $299 a month for the pill by strength and $349 for the pen. In separate placebo trials the top tablet dose and the pen produced similar average weight loss.
