How the number is computed
Sum of "Total Spending" for each year across every GLP-1 brand's "Overall" row (all manufacturers combined) in CMS's Medicare Part D Spending by Drug dataset, data year 2024.
Included
- Brands: Ozempic, Mounjaro, Trulicity, Rybelsus, Wegovy, Bydureon Bcise, Victoza 3-Pak, Victoza 2-Pak, Liraglutide, Byetta, Zepbound.
Excluded
- Insulin combinations: Soliqua (insulin glargine and lixisenatide); Xultophy (insulin degludec and liraglutide).
- Beneficiaries are not summed across brands: one person can fill two brands in a year.
Read it with care
- Spending is gross drug cost (what plans and patients paid pharmacies), before manufacturer rebates and discounts.
- Medicare Part D does not cover drugs prescribed for weight loss alone; most of this spending is for type 2 diabetes, with Wegovy and Zepbound covered for other approved uses.
- CMS flags a brand-year as an outlier when its average spending per unit looks unusual: Wegovy 2023.
