Ozempic for Weight Loss - Week 1 Numbers and Side Effects

Patient storyPerfection Hangover38,467 views7:50Jul 2022

Our summary

Melissa Blevins of the Perfection Hangover channel describes her first week using Ozempic for weight loss. She says her weight has been a problem for four to six years, that she lost a lot and regained it, and that she struggles with evening snacking and a sweet tooth. She puts her BMI at about 25 to 26 and says she could lose roughly 35 or 40 pounds. She is 5 foot 5 and started at 166 pounds.

What else the video covers

She explains how she got the prescription: a virtual visit with an online doctor, covered by her United Healthcare insurance with no copay. She says the doctor told her candidacy depends mostly on whether insurance will pay. The pharmacy first asked for prior authorization, so she sent her doctor blood tests from the previous year showing high cholesterol, plus a 35 inch waist measurement. She says the drug costs about a thousand dollars a month, but her cost on insurance came to $24.99. She also recommends checking GoodRx, which she says is free.

On the medication itself, she says the doctor started her at 0.25 milligrams for a month, then 0.5 milligrams after another month, and possibly 1 milligram if needed. The pen comes with six needles and is injected into the stomach once a week. She describes the steps, admits she first injected into the needle cap by mistake, and says the injection was not painful. She took Dramamine beforehand but reports no side effects at all, which she notes is not the norm. She says she went from 166 pounds to 161.6 pounds in one week, does not expect that rate to continue, and plans a week two update.

Our guides closest to what this video covers, with prices checked weekly.

  • How much does Ozempic cost: $25 covered, $199 to $499 cash, and why the weight-loss version of the same drug is cheaper

Ozempic has four prices. With a commercial plan that covers it for type 2 diabetes, Novo's card brings it to $25 a month, capped at $100 of savings. Without coverage, Novo sells the pen direct for $199 a month for the first two fills if you are new, then $349 for 0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg and $499 for 2 mg, and a new Ozempic pill from $149. For weight loss, insurers refuse it because it is a diabetes drug, and Wegovy, the same semaglutide in the weight box, costs less from the same company. Compounded semaglutide starts at $69 on our board.

  • How to get Ozempic online: the prescription, the pen or the pill, and what each route costs

You can get Ozempic online, but only with a prescription, and a telehealth clinician can write one after a video or questionnaire visit. Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes, so a plan that covers it brings it to $25 a month with Novo's card. Without coverage, Novo's own pharmacy sells the pen from $199 for two starter fills, then $349 to $499, and the new Ozempic pill from $149. For weight loss alone, Wegovy or compounded semaglutide from $69 usually fits better.

  • Ozempic for weight loss, and where the ladder runs out

Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes, not for weight loss. Taking it to lose weight is off-label, which is legal, extremely common, and a prescriber's decision. The consequence nobody mentions is the ceiling: Ozempic's doses stop at 2 mg while Wegovy, the same molecule approved for weight, goes to 2.4 mg with a 7.2 mg strength above that. Someone using Ozempic for weight eventually runs out of ladder, and switching brand is the usual answer.
