Mounjaro Weight Loss Timeline: 1 Month vs 3 vs 6 vs 12… What REALLY Happens
Our summary
Jenelle Ketcham, who goes by Jen, says she has been on a GLP-1 medication for 2.5 years and has lost 90 lb. She started with Mounjaro, moved to compounded tirzepatide for a while, and is now using up Mounjaro again. She states she is not a medical professional and says people should set baselines and expectations with their own doctor. The video walks through what she says to expect at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year.

What else the video covers
For month 1, she describes a quick drop in appetite, possible nausea and fatigue, and a strange mental adjustment. She suggests 5 to 10 lb of loss depending on dose and starting point, and recommends hydration, tracking protein, walking and keeping a journal of dose, symptoms and wins. At month 3 she describes visible changes, around 10 to 15 lb lost for the example she gives, a possible first plateau, and more automatic habits. She says she lost around 40 lb in 3 months while staying on 5 mg for a total of 16 weeks, and that dosing is a decision between each person and their doctor.
At month 6 she says people could be down 30, 40 or 50 lb, with possible loose skin or muscle loss, which is why she suggests shifting toward strength training and protein. She reports being down 66 lb at six months and off blood pressure medication, and going from an XXL to a medium shirt. At one year she says the focus moves to sustainable habits and maintenance questions, and that the medication is a tool while habits are the foundation.

Questions this video answers
How much weight can you lose in the first month on Mounjaro?
Jen says she thinks 5 to 10 lb is possible in month 1, depending on dose and starting point. She stresses this is her opinion and that people should set expectations with their own doctor.
How much weight did Jen lose in 3 months on Mounjaro?
She says she lost around 40 lb in 3 months. She states she stayed on 5 mg for a total of 16 weeks, after increasing once following month 1.
Is a weight loss plateau normal around month 3 on a GLP-1?
Jen says the first plateau may show up around month 3, when the scale could slow down. She says fat loss may still continue, with water retention and body composition shifts possibly hiding progress on the scale.
What does she suggest doing when weight loss slows at 6 months?
She says that around six months weight loss will probably slow and people may notice loose skin or muscle loss. She suggests shifting the focus to building strength, such as strength training one or two days a week, and prioritizing protein.

- Mounjaro for weight loss, and why Zepbound exists
Mounjaro is tirzepatide approved for type 2 diabetes. Zepbound is the same molecule from the same maker, approved for weight management, and it goes to the same 15 mg. So unlike Ozempic and Wegovy, there is no dose ceiling pushing you from one to the other: the reason people move is coverage and cash price, not strength. Using Mounjaro for weight is off-label and a prescriber's decision. In the one head-to-head trial, tirzepatide beat semaglutide, 20.2% mean body-weight loss at 72 weeks against 13.7%.
- Mounjaro side effects: the label's numbers by dose, the low blood sugar risk, and how tirzepatide compares at weight-loss doses
On Mounjaro's own label, the common side effects are stomach ones and they rise with the dose: nausea in 12, 15 and 18 percent of people at 5, 10 and 15 mg against 4 percent on placebo, diarrhea 12 to 17 against 9, and any gastrointestinal reaction in 37 to 44 percent against 20. Most of it happens while the dose is being raised and fades. Low blood sugar is rare on Mounjaro alone and is mainly a risk when it is added to insulin or a sulfonylurea. Below: the full table, the rare warnings, and why Zepbound's numbers for the same molecule look higher.
- Mounjaro vs Ozempic, and the trial everyone quotes about it
Mounjaro is tirzepatide and Ozempic is semaglutide: different molecules, not two brands of the same drug. Both are approved for type 2 diabetes, and the weight-loss versions are Zepbound and Wegovy. In the one head-to-head trial, SURMOUNT-5, tirzepatide produced 20.2% mean body-weight loss at 72 weeks against semaglutide's 13.7%. The detail almost every page omits: that trial dosed semaglutide to 2.4 mg in people without diabetes, which is the Wegovy range. Ozempic tops out at 2 mg. The famous result did not test Ozempic's dose range.
