This is What Ozempic does to the Body after 9 Months (This Gets REAL)

Patient storyAbbey Sharp154,827 views28:48Apr 2024

Our summary

In this video, Abbey Sharp checks in with her friend and business partner Ginger, who has been taking Ozempic for about 10 months. Sharp says Ginger is not her client, and that the series is not meant to promote Ozempic as a first-line weight loss option. Ginger says she is down 40 lbs, has held that weight for a few months, and is comfortable with it. She describes the biggest change as the end of constant food noise, and says she now wants to build muscle.

What else the video covers

Sharp reviews clips of Ginger's recent meals. She suggests more protein at breakfast, such as adding egg whites or using a protein shake, and more fiber from frozen fruit and vegetables or from berries, avocado and other vegetables. She also recommends keeping a short journal of how different meals make you feel, rather than counting calories, for a couple of weeks and again after any dose change. Ginger says stress has recently left her nauseated and unable to eat, and that her bowel symptoms from IBS-D have long been tied to stress and were there before Ozempic.

The pair then discuss the Oprah special and the view of obesity as a disease, with Sharp noting the concerns raised in the Health at Every Size community. Sharp also describes early phase 1 results for a monthly injection called maridebart. She says the highest 840 mg dose led to 14.5% body weight loss and that weight stayed down by up to 11.2% 150 days after the last injection. They close on questions of who should qualify and how to keep access fair.

Questions this video answers

How much weight did Ginger lose on Ozempic after 10 months?

Ginger says she is down 40 lbs after about 10 months on Ozempic. She says she has stayed around that weight for a few months and is fine with it, and that she now wants to gain muscle.

How can you eat enough protein while on Ozempic?

Sharp suggests getting protein at every meal and snack. She mentions adding egg whites to a fried egg and using a protein shake on busy days, and says this helps with appetite and with preventing muscle loss.

What did the monthly weight loss injection trial show?

Sharp says phase 1 participants who received the highest dose, 840 mg, lost 14.5% of their body weight. She says weight stayed reduced by up to 11.2% 150 days after the last of three doses.

Should you track food or feelings on Ozempic?

Sharp recommends noting how meals affect digestion, energy and fullness instead of counting calories. She says a couple of weeks is enough, with a repeat after any dose change, using an app or pen and paper.

Our guides closest to what this video covers, with prices checked weekly.

  • “Ozempic butt” is not a side effect either

“Ozempic butt” describes loss of volume and sagging skin around the buttocks after fast weight loss. Like “Ozempic face”, it is not a listed adverse effect and not something the drug does to that area specifically. Fat leaves everywhere when you lose fat, including where you would rather it stayed, and skin that loses volume quickly does not always retract to match. It follows large rapid weight loss from any cause. The two things you influence are how fast you lose and whether you can afford to stay on a steady dose instead of stopping and rebounding.

  • Ozempic for weight loss, and where the ladder runs out

Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes, not for weight loss. Taking it to lose weight is off-label, which is legal, extremely common, and a prescriber's decision. The consequence nobody mentions is the ceiling: Ozempic's doses stop at 2 mg while Wegovy, the same molecule approved for weight, goes to 2.4 mg with a 7.2 mg strength above that. Someone using Ozempic for weight eventually runs out of ladder, and switching brand is the usual answer.

  • Ozempic side effects, and the ones that actually make people stop

The common Ozempic side effects are gastrointestinal: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation. They cluster in the first weeks and after each dose increase, which is why the drug is titrated slowly rather than started at the dose that does the work. Ozempic also carries a boxed warning for thyroid C-cell tumour risk, and the label for Wegovy, the same molecule, advises against combining it with another GLP-1. The practical thing nobody tells you: most people who quit do it during titration, and what decides whether that costs them money is the seller's pause and refund terms, not the sticker price.
